WIP: Escape From Cyber City

Post by Tam Toucan » Fri Sep 01, 2017 9:23 pm

There's probably a rule that every dev at some point in their life writes a glowy vector game. Well, it seems I've reached that point.

Somehow I ended up with glowy vector screen code, so I thought I'd just knock up a simple little game. That way the graphics would be easy and I wouldn't need many. So of course I then wrote a vector drawing program and spent ages moving lines around creating shit looking graphics.

No actual game yet (as usual). So far I've spent ages tweaking numbers for effects for
1. Intro - http://tamtoucan.com/junk/intro.mp4
2. Pissing about - http://tamtoucan.com/junk/face.mp4
3. Beam generator - http://tamtoucan.com/junk/beam.mp4
4. Adding lightning to the beam generator - http://tamtoucan.com/junk/spawn.mp4
5. Particle system - http://tamtoucan.com/junk/punch.mp4

I have actually got some decent AI code done for the robots moving about the maze. Collision detection is also working, so next up it's collision effects. Then it might actually start to feel like a game.

Looks great so far ... a bit Berzerk-like. :)
I hope you make something out of it.

Thanks guys. The lure of the "next WIP" is strong, but managing to keep at this one. Lost a lot of this week trying to upgrade my kid's phone to Android 6.0 (only had to delve into the world of phone ROMs and SP Flash Tool a couple of times, but as always there was much swearing).

Been working on the player punch vs robot collision. Lots of tweaking trying to get the speeds, damage, FXs etc to something reasonable. Got enough to move on to robots shooting next week. Today I might make the explosion parts spin.

Seriously loving the particle effects!

Jeez that was a quick week. Got robot beams added and collision detection working. Then added a glow effect to the player when they get hit. Didn't spend any time tweaking it though and I reused the particle effect of the robot getting punched for the beam hitting walls/player.

Next I'll add player damage and blocking with the shield (you can crouch and hold a shield in front of you) and an effect for the shield being hit.

Yikes TWO weeks? Well I did make a 4ft foam greatsword (for the kid honest!) and break my 5th metatarsal (stupid calcium leeching steroids). Game wise I added Lightning attack and blocking the beam or lightning with the shield. Also got quite a nice "electrified" effect on the player when they get hit by lightning.

http://tamtoucan.com/junk/lightning.mp4

The lightning isn't final, it's got a really strange set of numbers to tweek. Just now I think it looks a bit to "solid/hard" if you know what I mean.

Next up I should add some health and try and get basic slice of actual gameplay. So one or two types of robots and just see how it "feels. Need to work out if your punch needs to recharge or if your shield can block indefinitely etc.

That looks so sweet :) The lightning looks spot on to me :)

Also, this reminds me so much of Major Havoc ! Was this inspiration for it ?
