C.H.I.P. ("The $9 Computer")

Format specific babbling. From Speccy to anything that's not the Speccy but they're probably not as good but we'll live, I guess.

Ah, got an email this morning saying my package has finally shipped. They average two weeks delivery time... Keeping my fingers crossed that they manage because Canada Post is looking to go on strike in two weeks :(

As posted in the Russian Arcade Mini Compo thread, I have finally received my PocketCHIPS. I will update this thread when I have a bit of time with some pictures and comments, but I'll just say quickly that I'm pleased with it so far!

Nothing. But got an email yesterday evening announcing a delay. Not expected to ship until end of august now. Hey ho. At least it's sunny outside :)

I'm glad you're handling the news better than some of the people in the official forums have been :)

Some photos!
Front and back views of the box and device:
Image

British Pound and Canadian Dollar for scale. Crinkle-paper because I'm using my wife's photo setup and it was in there. Booting up!
Image

Top view. USB slot occupied by a memory stick (not included).
Image

A little PICO-8 action. I made those sprites externally - it's really hard to get precise actions with the low res touchscreen.
Image

I tried installing The Gimp, just to see if it would work. It does! Fairly well from what I've tried, too.
Image

SunVox (preinstalled): Haven't really worked it out yet. But I intend to!
Image

I've only had it less than a week (in which I didn't have a lot of free time) so I'm still getting familiar with it. The OS still needs work (has no OpenGL ES hardware acceleration at the moment, they're still working on the drivers) but I am satisfied with it so far. I barely notice my commute time now :)

The Command Line is a whole different world when you're used to Windows. Couldn't get the Pico-8 screenshot functionality working. Asked about it in the PocketChip/Pico-8 forum. The workaround a few other forum members came up with was to install two programs: a program that takes screenshots (scrot) and one that listens for key-presses and binds them to events based on the config you set (xbindkeys). Now I can take Pico-8 screenshots :)
