C.H.I.P. ("The $9 Computer")

Format specific babbling. From Speccy to anything that's not the Speccy but they're probably not as good but we'll live, I guess.

C.H.I.P. ("The $9 Computer")

Post by bignobody » Fri May 08, 2015 3:50 pm

It'll be a year before I'll (possibly) receive one, but I backed the CHIP kickstarter last night. Went for the Pocket CHIP, because I'm not that handy (yet) and that gives me the most functionality out of the box.

Seems promising.

Gah, another micro-computer. We've had so many appear over the last couple of years it's crazy.

That being said I might get the VGA or HDMI version just because it's so cheap. Perhaps it could be fun to fiddle with and it should be possible to find some use for one. And at that price it won't matter much if it ends up in the drawer with all the other gadgets after a couple of weeks.

*Ding!**Ding!**Ding!* Yep, total impulse "buy" for me. I'll revive this thread in a year if it shows up.

It definitely looks cool but I find them really short on actual, usable information - they claim open source but they don't tell you if the firmware will be open sourced (and SoC manufacturers usually don't do that), which is kind of a big deal if you want a GPU-accelerated desktop for instance.

I don't want to sound pessimistic, and at $9 a board it's a really nice piece of kit, it's just that I've been burned before by DIY kit vendors who were very enthusiastic on the possibilities of their hardware but "forgot" to mention some of the important facts (*cough*raspberry pi*cough*). I don't want you to get Braben'ed like me :)

Damn you! I'm a sucker for this kind of thing! PocketCHIP pledged. Impressive $632K of $50K target well and truly trashed :)
Remakes in progress...

Shh, it's a secret ;)

Yeah, with 26 days left to go I can see them easily passing the million dollar mark.

An interesting piece on this thing - and pretty much sums up why Mr. Gadget (me) hasn't bought it yet...

I was intrigued enough to gamble. I'll post again if I get some hardware.
